Today was pretty successful. The literacy coach came in to observe my class right after special subject (PE). I wasn't expecting her and I haven't taught reading or language in about 6 years - only math. So I was pretty nervous. I brought all the children to the carpet and we were comparing and contrasting trains and cars. They were being very attentive and sharing some good ideas. Then we talked about prefixes and I wrote some on the chart and we discussed how each prefix changes the meaning of a word and gave examples. Then I explained what they were to do when they went back to their seats. She wrote some stuff down and left. She came back later and gave me a certificate printed from the computer that said I showed good teaching. The class and I had a big group hug. It was a nice moment! Sometimes those moments are few and far between.
We were doing subtraction with borrowing later on, and I was telling the kids that the other half of each subtraction problem was the "check" where they must add the answer to the number above it to see if they get the top number. We practiced a few on the overhead. Then I gave them some problems to do by themselves. They were working and one boy came over to me and said, "You made a mistake, Mrs. Fortenberry! I checked it and the answer I got doesn't match the top number!" I had to laugh and I told him that he messed up and I showed him where. He looked totally baffled - he was so sure that it was my mistake!
When I passed out the progress reports for the week, one boy's behavior comment said "chewing gum in class." He was so upset and he told me that "the gum was hers...she gave it to me." I told him that it didn't matter where the gum came from, he was the one chewing it.
Well, can't wait to see what kind of exciting things tomorow brings!
